Born in Sydney in 1964, Susan Baird is a
painter whose artistic oeuvre has developed out of a principally self-taught
tradition. Her career has been one of much practical exploration of her medium,
oil paint, coupled with significant amounts of travel for extended periods of
time.
In 1992, Baird undertook practical
study in New York City at the New York Studio School. This work was part of the
artist living and working in the United States, during which time she developed
a major series of Manhattan urban landscapes that are now in collections in
Australia and the USA. Since returning to Australia in 1995 she has produced a
constantly evolving body of work inspired by inner city vistas.
In 2005, Baird’s work featured in Art
in Reverse, a contemporary Australian Art Series for television produced by the
Ovation Channel titled An Urban Canvas, which subsequently viewed on Sunday Arts
on the ABC.
Her current work explores the
Australian landscape. She lives and works in Sydney.
